AMIE DICKE, ALANNAH FARRELL, AMANDA WALL, JANET WERNER
May 5 – 9, 2021
Anat Ebgi is pleased to present a curated selection of new works by Amie Dicke, Alannah Farrell, Amanda Wall, and Janet Werner. With a strong emphasis on portraiture, the works for Frieze New York 2021 direct focus to topics such as spectatorship, hidden suffering, glamour, and sensuality.
Amie Dicke’s sandpaper abrasion works, where prints of images from various sources—fashion magazines to Bauhaus catalogues—are charged with a sense of physicality, revealing alternate and undetected associations through judicious removal. Neither celebratory nor heroic, Alannah Farrell’s sensitive portraits portray their friends and queer community in moments of solitary contemplation, finding a productive space in reconstruction and the painful process of becoming. The gestural brushstrokes of Amanda Wall’s painting evoke the emotionality of Abstract Expressionism while embracing bright and cheerful color; her subjects are frequently depicted prone and exposed giving the works an intimate and fetishistic perspective. Janet Werner’s distinct brand of fictional portraits trade in multiple, fragile personalities culled both from fashion magazines and art historical sources resulting in composite characters that remain ambiguous and fluid.
