Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Shoshanna Weinberger received her MFA from Yale University, School of Art, 2003 and BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, 1995. Living and working in Newark, NJ since 2006, Weinberger’s studio practice is rooted in an exploration of her Afro-Caribbean-American lineage through abstraction. Exhibiting for over two decades, some public exhibition highlights: National Gallery of Jamaica; The Newark Museum of Art; The Bronx Museum; New Jersey State Museum; Royal West of England Academy, Bristol, UK; Wave Hill, Bronx; NY; and NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. Weinberger is the recipient of numerous awards, fellowships and grants, including most recently: 2022-2023 In Focus Fellowship, Jamaica Art Society; 2023 City of Newark Creative Catalyst Fund Grant; and 2023-2024 New Jersey Futures Artist Fellow, The Center for Cultural Power in partnership with Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. Artist Residencies include 2015 Joan Mitchell Center, New Orleans; 2018 Project for Empty Space, Newark, NJ; 2022 McColl Center, Charlotte, NC and 2023 Guttenberg Arts, Guttenberg, NJ.Public Art Commissions include 2021 Newark Arts Four Corners Public, Newark, NJ; 2022 New Terminal A, Newark Liberty International Airport; and 2023 Art at Amtrak, NY Penn Station. Her work is in numerous permanent public collections, including New Jersey State Museum, Trenton; The Margulies Collection, Miami, FL; AC Kingston Collection, Kingston, Jamaica; The Sheldon Museum of Art, Lincoln, NE; Bryn Mawr College Special Collections, Bryn Mawr, PA; and Paul Robeson Galleries Collection, Rutgers University, Newark, NJ.
